Your Baby’s First Visit
Your newborn’s first checkup typically takes place 2–3 days after leaving the hospital, when your baby is about 2 to 4 days old. During this visit, your pediatrician will carefully assess how your baby is adjusting to life outside the womb. This includes checking weight, feeding, sleeping, diaper output, and overall health. The doctor will also listen to your concerns, answer questions, and help you feel confident about caring for your baby at home.
What to Expect During a Newborn Care Visit
At each newborn visit, your pediatrician will:
- Check growth and weight gain to make sure your baby is feeding well.
- Perform a physical exam to look for signs of jaundice, dehydration, or other early issues that can arise in the first days of life.
- Review feeding routines, whether breastfeeding, formula feeding, or a combination of those, and help troubleshoot any difficulties.
- Monitor sleep patterns, reflexes, and muscle tone to ensure your baby’s nervous system is developing normally.
- Review newborn screenings and vaccinations, and discuss what comes next in your baby’s care schedule.
